How to Break Your Speeding Habit

Speeding often starts little by little. A driver may push past the speed limit by 2 or 3 miles per hour, but once they get comfortable, that number starts to go up. For many, it is hard to break this habit. There are some tips you can put to use to break your speeding habit for good:

  • Use cruise control — Setting your car at a specific speed can help curb your speeding habits. Cruise control is especially helpful on long drives or on the highway.
  • Leave earlier — Make an effort to leave for your destination a couple of minutes earlier. This will give you extra time on the road in case you hit heavy traffic.
  • Learn what triggers your speeding — Some drivers have triggers that cause them to drive faster. If it often happens when you’re tired or stressed, make changes in your lifestyle to help avoid those triggers.
  • Use speed-monitoring apps — Several navigation apps have built-in speed monitoring. If you exceed the speed limit, an alert will notify you to slow down.
  • Understand the cost of speeding — When a driver speeds, it can come with a price. These costs include speeding tickets, a suspended license, extra gas, and higher insurance costs.

Habits can be hard to break, but speeding is one you can’t afford to keep. Although it may take time and extra effort, the reward will be great. Choosing not to speed can ensure that you keep yourself and other drivers safe out on the road.
