A 26-year-old man was arrested after stealing an ambulance and crashing into multiple vehicles. The crashes occurred on Sunday, July 31, in Houston, Texas.

The Multiple Crashes

On Sunday, July 31, around 10:45 p.m., a Houston man stole an ambulance and took it for a joyride around town.

According to the Houston Police Department, the 26-year-old man took the ambulance to a fast-food restaurant, where he hit three cars in the parking lot. The man then left the restaurant parking lot and started driving on Westheimer Road.

The man hit a vehicle while traveling on that road but continued until he reached a Whataburger parking lot. Police stated that the man entered that drive-thru going the wrong direction and hit the first vehicle waiting in line to pick up food. The impact of the crash sent the first vehicle into the car behind them.

Houston police arrived on the scene shortly after and took the ambulance driver into custody. The driver faces one count of felony theft for stealing the ambulance and a misdemeanor for failing to stop and provide the police with information.

There were no injuries reported in any of these collisions.

The Common Causes of Reckless Driving

When a person drives recklessly, they are doing so willfully with zero regard for the safety of themselves or other drivers. This kind of behavior can be sudden or out of habit, depending on the cause. While there are many reasons why a person may drive recklessly, the common causes include:

  • Inexperience Young and new drivers often drive recklessly due to their inexperience. Because they haven’t been driving very long, they’re less likely to recognize how dangerous their behavior behind the wheel can be.
  • Impatience Drivers in a hurry to get somewhere often engage in reckless driving. These drivers lack the patience to wait in traffic and will do whatever is necessary to get where they need to go.
  • Road Rage Many drivers become frustrated and angry behind the wheel. This can lead drivers to experience road rage, letting anger cloud their judgment on the road.
  • Drugs or alcohol Drivers who use drugs or alcohol can have impaired judgment while driving. These substances can give drivers a false sense of confidence and cause them to drive recklessly on the road.

Reckless driving is becoming a greater problem as drivers allow more distractions inside their vehicles and quickly become impatient on the road. These drivers have little regard for other vehicles and are willing to put themselves and others in danger to get where they want to go.

Before you get behind the wheel, make sure all distractions are put away and give yourself plenty of time to reach your final destination.
