The Hit-and-Run Crash

On Friday, September 16, Houston police responded to the scene of a hit-and-run crash in the 8800 block of Westheimer Road near Lazy Hollow Drive.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the remains of a 68-year-old man. According to police, the man was walking in a crosswalk when a driver hit him with their vehicle. The driver then drove away without stopping to help. Further investigation showed that the 68-year-old man was hit near Lazy Hollow Drive and dragged a mile to a mile and a half down the road. Police found the man’s walker near the scene of the crash.

Police believe that only one driver was involved in the crash, and speed may have been a factor. Investigators are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage that may help provide answers to the incident.

The Houston Police Department is asking anyone with information on the driver or vehicle to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4072.

What to Do If You’re the Victim of a Hit-and-Run Crash

Recently, it seems like hit-and-run crashes are all over the news. If you’re like most people, you simply glance over it or somberly reflect for a moment. You do so thinking it’ll never happen to you, but what should you do if you suddenly become the victim of a hit-and-run crash?

  • Make sure everyone is safe — Once you’ve been hit, it’s important to move your vehicle out of oncoming traffic if possible. After you’ve moved to safety, check yourself and your passengers for any injuries and seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Call the police — Finding the hit-and-run driver may be difficult, but calling the police immediately after the crash can significantly help your chances. Police can also file a report that can be used for your insurance claim.
  • Record information and gather evidence — After you’ve contacted the police, take some time to write down any information you remember about the crash. Any details regarding the vehicle, license plate, or driver could help police find the driver. You should also inspect your vehicle and the area around the crash site for evidence that could be used to identify the other vehicle.
  • Contact an attorney — While many people phone their insurance company first, speaking to an attorney beforehand can be helpful. An experienced car accident attorney can help you gather evidence and walk you through the steps of filing a claim.
  • Notify your insurance company — The final call you should make after a hit-and-run accident is to your insurance company. They can tell you what information you’ll need to file a claim and explain what your current policy covers.

Being the victim of a hit-and-run car crash can seem overwhelming and altogether hopeless. Although your adrenaline is likely to kick in, take a deep breath and remember the five steps listed above. By following these steps, you’ll have a better chance of finding the person responsible for hitting you.
