The Hit-and-Run Crash

On December 11, a Dodge Dart was traveling northbound on Cullen when a black Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling westbound on Schurmier ran a stop sign and T-boned the Dodge Dart. After the crash, the driver of the pickup truck and two other passengers took off on foot.

The driver of the Dodge Dart and a 7-year-old male passenger were injured in the crash. The 7-year-old girl passenger of the Dodge Dart was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead a few days later. The passengers of the Dodge Dart were headed home after a birthday party when the crash occurred.

Police are still searching for the suspects that fled the scene of the crash. The HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Hit and Run Unit is asking anyone with information to contact them at 713-247-4072.

The Importance of Following Traffic Signs

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted an 8-year study from 1997 to 2004 on traffic accidents that occurred at intersections controlled by traffic signals. Approximately 65% of those accidents caused by a failure to obey traffic signals resulted in Straight Crossing Path accidents. In addition, 69% of those accidents caused by failure to yield to the right-of-way traffic signs resulted in Left Turn Across Path/Opposite Direction crashes.

Traffic signs and signals keep traffic in order and reduce the number of accidents on the road. When these signs and signals are ignored by drivers, severe crashes and fatalities can happen. There are many reasons why people choose to ignore traffic signs, including:

  • Intoxication — Driving under the influence can impair a driver’s sense of direction and cause them to miss or simply ignore traffic signs.
  • Drivers thinking signs are unnecessary — Some drivers believe that certain traffic signs such as yield signs are unnecessary and fail to follow them.
  • The belief that they won’t get caught — Because drivers don’t think they’ll get caught by police, they choose to ignore certain traffic signs and signals.

Following traffic signs and signals is a simple way to keep traffic flowing and protect yourself from a serious crash. When you get behind the wheel, always be alert and aware of the traffic signs around you and follow them as posted. If you’re intoxicated or too tired to drive, make other arrangements through a ride-share service or a friend. Taking responsibility for yourself on the road can help prevent severe accidents and fatalities.
