Houston Deputy Constable Left Unconscious After Intersection Collision

A Harris County Constable’s Office Precinct 5 deputy constable was admitted to the hospital on Friday, August 24th, after being involved in a wreck with an SUV in Northwest Harris County. The deputy was headed west on Louetta in his personal car on his way to work. The driver of the SUV was headed north on Kuykendahl.

A suspected cause of the crash is that one of the drivers took a red light. The woman may have also been under the influence, as traces of marijuana were found inside her vehicle.

After slipping in and out of consciousness, the deputy was transported by an ambulance to a local hospital. The deputy did suffer injuries but is expected to survive. The other driver was treated by paramedics on-site but did not suffer any injuries.

Statistics of Accidents on Texas Roads

A 2016 Texas Motor Vehicle Traffic Crash Report reveals just how prevalent crashes are on Texas roads. These traffic accidents have taken thousands of lives and injured thousands more. Distractions on the road and driving while intoxicated are noted as some of the main factors of these accidents.

According to the report, in 2016:

  • 3,794 fatalities were caused by motor vehicle traffic accidents.
  • 814 of those fatal accidents occurred at an intersection.
  • That same year, over 265,000 individuals sustained injuries in car crashes.
  • Of all the deaths that occurred, 1,018 people lost their lives in crashes caused by an intoxicated driver.
  • Distracted driving caused 460 deaths.

Injuries and Suffering

Intoxicated, reckless, and distracted drivers increase the likelihood of fatal crashes on Texas roads. As a victim, you may suffer a great deal of pain in these collisions. The following are broad types of injuries one can sustain in a car accident:

Impact Injuries

The impact of car crash can cause a driver or passenger to be tossed inside the vehicle. Impact injuries occur when the body collides with the interior surfaces of the vehicle such as the steering wheel, dashboard, or doors.

Penetrating Injuries

These injuries are caused by loose objects or flying debris. For example, a window may shatter causing shards of glass to inflict wounds to the skin.

Additional Injuries

A victim of a motor vehicle crash may suffer from specific injuries such as:

  • Whiplash
  • Broken bones
  • Sprained or strained muscles
  • Severe neck and head injuries

These injuries can be temporary or result in life-changing circumstances, and recovery time may vary per individual. In the worst case scenario, individuals can lose their life in a tragic motor vehicle accident.

Ultimately, car crashes can become a significant financial burden with the accumulation of medical expenses, therapy, and damage costs.
