Texas Motorcycle Accident Statistics You Should Know

The end results of a motorcycle accident can be life-altering, catastrophic, and lethal.

In 2019, Texas experienced a total number of 8,254 motorcycle accidents that resulted in either an injury or a fatality.

Out of those reported accidents, 410 individuals died that year. Additionally, 45% of those fatalities were reportedly not wearing any sort of helmets prior to their accident.

Contributing Factors That Lead To Motorcycle Accidents

Speeding: One of the most commonly reported causes of motorcycle accidents is going way above the speed limit. In fact, approximately 32% of all motorcycle-related fatalities have been linked to excessive speeding. While some motorcycles may have roaring engines that can make a motorcycle go up to 85 MPH, the faster one may go, the less reaction time a rider may have, which can lead to an accident.

Driving under the influence : While nobody should ever drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, these types of accidents occur far too often. Approximately 27% of all motorcyclist fatalities happen as a result of the rider operating their vehicle while intoxicated. These accidents are 100% preventable and a designated driver should always assist those too intoxicated to drive in order to prevent a tragedy on the road. Plan accordingly beforehand.

Lane splitting: These accidents occur when a rider tries to squeeze themselves in-between vehicles in both lanes, ultimately crashing into one of them.

Left-hand turns gone wrong: These types of accidents occur when a driver of an opposite vehicle ultimately fails to give the right of way to the rider, resulting in a potentially deadly collision.

Motorcycle defects : In certain cases, the flawed design of a motorcycle or its components may lead to a sudden accident. When this occurs, the motorcycle distributor or parts manufacturer may be held liable for the injuries and damages you’ve sustained.

Road defects : Severe weather may play a pivotal role in a motorcycle accident as a rider may lose their balance because of slippery roadways. Other key road defects may include lack of lighting or safety signs, debris, potholes, large rocks, and cracked pavements within roadways.
