Semi-Truck Collision Leaves 1 Dead in Nacogdoches

On the morning of October 27th, a collision on US 59 North involving 2 semi-trucks left one person dead.

Details About the Incident

According to local authorities, the accident occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. on US 59 North.

It is presumed that one of the truck drivers, towing a trailer, was headed north on US 59 on the outside lane and attempted to slow down in order to make a right turn on a private drive. A second semi-truck, also equipped with a trailer, was also headed north on US 59 and ended up colliding into the rear of the first semi-truck.

The 40-year-old driver of the first semi-truck and a 48-year-old passenger were both rushed to the nearest hospital, while the 65-year-old driver of the vehicle that caused the accident was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Texas Department of Transportation is currently investigating what factors may have led up to the accident.

The Colossal and Catastrophic Dangers of Trucking Accidents

Trucking accidents tend to be some of the most severe types of vehicle accidents there are. While they do not occur as often as passenger vehicle accidents, the end results are usually much more devastating, leaving victims with greater damages.

it is estimated that every 15 minutes, there is a truck accident that kills or injures a person in the United States , which results in approximately 500,000 accidents and 5,000 fatalities on an annual basis.

According to data compiled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it was reported that in 2018, the United States experienced a total of 4,136 truck-accident related fatalities. Out of those fatalities, approximately 60% were truck occupants, and 74% of those fatal accidents involved tractor-trailers.

Factors That Cause Semi-Truck Accidents

  • Weight and size of the tractor-trailers
  • Excessive speeding
  • Road conditions
  • Dangerous weather conditions
  • Untimed, sharp turns and/or awkward maneuvers
  • Driver fatigue
  • Distracted driving
  • Intoxicated driving
  • Improperly equipped vehicle
  • Improperly loaded trailers
  • Company negligence
  • Defective tires or other vehicle components
