Three Drivers Charged in Connection to Fatal Crash

Three drivers are facing DWI charges following a June 13th accident that resulted in the death of one woman. Authorities report that other charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

Details of the Event

According to Houston authorities, one woman is dead and three drivers are facing charges following a multi-vehicle accident on the I-45 North Freeway at West Road on June 13th.

“We’re going to charge all three drivers right now with DWI,” Sean Teare, Chief of Vehicular Crimes with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, told reporters. “And then, over the course of the next few days or weeks, we’re going to have the crash reconstruction unit really put it all together and really tell us what happened. Because at the end of the day, this woman is dead. This woman deserves to have the person who’s most at fault for her death to be held responsible.”

The deadly accident began when a vehicle traveling north on the freeway lost control and spun into another car, leaving the first vehicle disabled in the middle of the northbound lanes. At this point, it is believed that the victim exited one of the crashed vehicles and was struck by a northbound Mazda.

The drivers of both of the initial vehicles, as well as the driver of the Mazda, were all impaired at the time of the crash, according to Houston police.

Following the incident, two of the drivers involved were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The identities of the victim and drivers have not been released at this time.

Spotting a Drunk Driver

Several studies and plenty of anecdotal evidence will tell you that those who habitually drive drunk tend to think that they are excellent drunk drivers. While they may acknowledge that other people shouldn’t drive drunk, habitual drunk drivers tend to think they are the exception to the rule.

Unfortunately, this is virtually never true. Not every instance of drunk driving will end in an accident, but there tend to be certain dangerous behaviors you can watch out for to warn you that another driver may be drunk:

    • Erratic braking
    • Near misses
    • Very slow speeds
    • Weaving, swerving, or drifting
    • Wide turns
    • Random stops
    • Slow response to traffic lights
    • Illegal or abrupt turns
    • Driving in the dark without headlights

As you can see, there are plenty of hazardous decisions and maneuvers that drunk drivers often make that can put not only them but all other drivers on the road in danger. Because of this, it is absolutely never worth it to drive after drinking.

Instead, always make sure you have a plan to get home or stay the night after drinking. If you see a friend considering driving while they’re drunk, try your best to take their keys. They might get mad, but that’s better than being in an accident.
