Woman Struck by SUV in Harris County Dies

On January 6, a pedestrian was struck and killed in northwest Harris County in Texas. The victim was crossing an intersection after a trip to the grocery store.

The incident took place around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Wimbledon Estates Drive and Stuebner Airline Road. An SUV occupied by a mother, father, and two children were in the vehicle that struck the victim.

Witnesses say that the woman was walking in a designated crossing area, yet the light had turned green for the driver of the SUV. The family stopped to assist the victim and remained on the scene.

The woman was rushed to the local trauma center but was pronounced dead after being admitted. None of the other parties involved were injured in the accident.

Pedestrian Accidents and Deaths in Texas

The rate of pedestrian deaths in Texas has been consistent throughout the years. This is especially true in highly urbanized areas.

As per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of deaths throughout recent years include:

  • 2013 : 485 pedestrian deaths
  • 2017 : 616 pedestrian deaths
  • 2018 : 619 pedestrian deaths

Although traffic fatalities have more recently declined across the entire country, pedestrian deaths have risen. A variety of factors have contributed to this safety issue, including:

  • Increase in the number of people walking in populated areas.
  • Roads designed in urban areas making crosswalks more difficult to access and cross when there is traffic.
  • Increased use of SUVs. The number of pedestrian deaths involving SUVs increased significantly since 2013.

A “Pedestrian Danger Index” was performed by Smart Group America and the National Complete Streets Coalition. Numbers from this study reveal Texas to be the eighth most dangerous state for pedestrians.

In 2017, Texas alone accounted for 10 percent of the country’s total pedestrian fatality count. As the population in the state increases, these trends in higher pedestrian fatalities are expected to rise if strategies and safety measures are not implemented to reduce them.

Reducing Pedestrian Deaths in the Community

Houston is among the biggest metro areas in the United States and is expected to continue to grow. However, despite the increasing population, reducing pedestrian deaths is possible but certain efforts must be made.

Strategies to reduce pedestrian deaths include the following:

  • Watching and reducing speed limits.
  • Restructuring crosswalks on roads that are potentially dangerous for pedestrians to navigate.
  • Instilling a community concern for safe and vigilant driving.

All drivers have a duty to operate their vehicle with diligence. Driving at the speed limit can significantly decrease fatal collisions with other vehicles or pedestrians.
